Why does Swiss Post do business abroad?

Swiss Post, with almost 7,700 employees, generates about one sixth of its total revenues through business in other countries. One of the primary aims of this is to safeguard its business in Switzerland. On the domestic front, the company is facing declining mail volumes: The postal markets are being liberalised, letters are being increasingly replaced by electronic communications and the parcel market is highly competitive. To compensate for loss of earnings, Swiss Post is looking abroad, where it intends to grow profitably in niche markets by providing its business customers with access to international markets and by offering international companies integrated solutions for the optimisation of their business processes. Most international operations are conducted by two units of Swiss Post and by a joint venture in which the company holds a 50 percent stake:
